A workshop of Ruben van Rompaey

Eastern Expressions

period: 22 - 28 august

Onno van Swigchem

After the very successfull first Darbuka week in Acquet in 2008, Ruben comes back with a workshop where the needs of both the starting and the experienced darbuka player and percussionist are satisfied. This week eastern percussion will be fully exploited!.

If you want to acquaint yourself with the special sounds of the darbuka (a unique drum becoming very popular), or with eastern belly dance rhythms, or just play together and enjoy with others in a group? It will all be possible during this week under supervision of Ruben van Rompaey. During the week we will practise a number of eastern rhythms daily, attention will be given to: technique, posture, ensemble and improvisation. Next to darbuka also other percussion instruments are welcome like frame drum, bendir, riqq and drumset. If weather permits we will drum in the fresh open air as much as possible. The week will be concluded by a smashing performance before the villagers. A week brimfull rhythm, dynamics, enthousiasm, cosyness and relaxation!

Ruben van Rompaey (1978, Bergen op Zoom, Holland), fascinated by drums and percussion, started to play drums at a very early age. Along with his passion for Jazz and World music, he immediately developed a strong interest in ethnic musical styles and sounds. As a result he worked with various Turkish/oriental groups in the Netherlands.

After Ruben obtained his master degree (cum laude) in drums and percussion, he travelled back and forth to Istanbul, Turkey, where he lived and was classically trained on oriëntal percussion by well known percussion masters over there. Ruben has won several awards, like the Tama Drummers Award (1999), the Erasmus Jazz Award (2000), and a scholarship (2001), amongst others. He recently developed a series of workshops in Turkish rhythms for the Dutch magazine Slagwerkkrant.

Presently, Ruben is very active as a professional drums and percussion artist and has performed at a variety of international Jazz and Belly Dance festivals, such as the Big Bang festival (Holland 2006), Tribal Café (USA 2005) en solo tour Japan (2007). He developed two unique methods for darbuka plus a supplementary book and has two world percussion releases on the American label EMP, his third album scheduled to be released in 2008 (www.empcds.com). Ruben is a member of the formation Solace Live, having done a Pacific Northwest tour USA (2006) and a European tour (2007). By the end of 2007 his signature cymbals series was launched by Turkish Cymbals Istanbul (www.turkishcymbals.com).

After having taught for several years at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory, Ruben opened his own Drums & Darbuka Drum School in August 2007 (see: www.darbuka.nl and www.myspace.com/rubenvanrompaey).
