A full week of swinging for singers and instrumentalists! Soul nostalgia from the sixties until present day soul! The blazing rhythm section carries the smashing wind section to staggering heights. Singers, both male and female, have never experienced such a live band. Delicious solo's, breaks, riffs, its all part of the game.

In the sixties soul originated from rhythm & blues and gospel. Artist like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles were leading. Next the record label Motown started a whole new scene with stars like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Etta James and Stevie Wonder. Soul on its turn originated funk and disco. A little side trip to Earth, Wind and Fire and Maceo Parker (altist of James Brown) is obvious.
Nowadays it is rather hip to play soul again. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings can be considered modern versions of Aretha Franklin. Just like Eli Reed who sounds more or less like Wilson Pickett and James Hunter as Sam Cooke.
We also have a few Dutch 'soul frogs'. Waylon is the first Dutch man who has signed a record contract with Motown. Alain Clark and Sabrina Stark also possess that soul sound. The new wave of soul singers are Alicia Keys, Duffy, Angie Stone, Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse.

We will play a lot of these songs. On my website you can listen to several mp3 files. Attention is given to groove or swing. The timing of the windsection must be completely equal. How do you play a solo given a chord progression? What are typical soul licks? The wind section must be able to read notes, the rhythm section chords. Experience with improvising is not required.

The singers will have a few songs as lead. According to what fits your voice and what you like to sing. In the other songs multivocal backgroundriffs will be practised. It is wonderfull to play a full week with a live band. The occupation: rhythmsection with bass, drums, piano, maximum 2 gitars, 3 singers (both male and female) en wind players: maximum 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 altists, 2 tenorists, 1 baritonsaxophoneplayer, 1 sopraansaxophoneplayer and flute.

In a video we will get a peep behind the curtains on how it is to play in a soul band. On our free wednesday afternoon the real soul lover will study a somersault (with medical permit only). Our appearance on the stage can thus become a whirling show. Neatly dressed!

Saxophoneplayer Ferdi Schukking (Amsterdam,1959) has studied sopranosaxophone at Adri van Velsen in Maastricht. Next to that he studied composition at Misha Mengelberg in Amsterdam and microtonality at dr. Rudolf Rasch in Utrecht.
He plays contemporary improvised music in ‘Triosonic’, based on modern composition techniques from 20th century classical music. CDs of this trio have been received with enthousiasm by the press and the public. In november 2002 Triosonic has been touring with guestsoloist and pianist Michiel Braam.
With the Romanian ‘Jazz Unit’ he made the CD ‘From Now On’ and appeared on the stage in Romania and France. And with ‘Sinew’ (Ruud van Helvert on drums) in Spain and Germany. The group ‘4 Horns Only’ (trombone, horn and 2 saxophones) plays its own compositions and ‘Gemong’ (with tabla-speler Sandip Bhattacharya) seeks the confrontation between two representatives of the classical Indian music and two Dutch improvisors. ‘The Cricketeers’ play songs of Walt Disney in a jazz-sextet setting with singer Marco Hetzer. Marco together with Gabby Bakker also sang the childrens songs on texts of Hans Dorrestijn. These 12 tone compositions are recorded on CD in 2003.
Apart from the sopranosaxophone he also plays tenor-, bariton- and altsaxophone.
He is the managing director of music school Voorne (Hellevoetsluis, Westvoorne and Brielle). He also leads many workshops in Rotterdam, Gouda, Woerden, Meppel, Utrecht, ‘s-Hertogenbosch en Acquet (Frankrijk). In 2005 he wrote his own improvising methodology in seven parts named: ‘Improviseren kun je leren’
