A workshop of Tjitze Vogel

From the eye, into the heart

period: 25-31 july

Tjitze Vogel

A workshop about reading with your ears. By understanding music better we can trust our ears more when we improvise and play music by heart: this is essential in jazz and improvisation to progress from studying to creating music. Did'nt jazz and its style of improvisation come into being when musicians some 100 years ago tried to remember the melodies of marching songs and popular dance music? We will practise that by playing and altering melodies by ear, knowledge of scales, chords, rhythms, composition forms, producing crib notes (not the same as cribbing) and exercises of memory, listening and playing. We will work with conveniently arranged jazz- and impro-pieces (suggestions are welcome!), which we will learn to play by heart. The intention is that you will learn to trust your ears better, understand how (jazz) music is constructed and acquire the nerve to play with that. And of course we will try to make a swinging jazz party at the end of the week when we give a performance before the villagers. This workshop is meant for those who are slightly familiar with their instrument already and want to acquire more freedom in playing music, jazz and improvisation.
